A Unique Ride In The 2022 Vision EQXX Concept
The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX is currently the hot new thing going when it comes to luxury concept vehicles. This particular prototype is considered to be quite special as very few concepts actually go beyond just strutting their stuff on stage, and proving their engineered capabilities.
After its initial debut at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz quickly demonstrated the car’s real-world performance on multiple long-distance journeys across Europe. The longest of these was from Stuttgart, Germany, to Silverstone, England, where it ultimately covered 787 miles on a single charge of its battery, which holds just under 100.0 kWh. This is considered an impressive feat for a vehicle that was constructed in just over a year but is a shadow of the slew of electrified advancements that we should be expecting from the company.
The EQXX supposedly has a curb weight of 3900 pounds, and while the rear-fixed radial-flux motor produces a safe 241 horsepower, the thrust is generous and light, while the delicate steering is impressively firm.
According to reviewers at Car and Driver, the EQXX’s gained great momentum through the car’s regenerative braking system. It was able to gather a bit of speed and easily glide around corners, with the mass of the floor-fixed battery effectively gripping its body motions. Effortless switching of the steering-wheel paddles through the different stages of regeneration, from none to total one-pedal operation, can swiftly slow the vehicle for tight turns and intersections. It’s for this reason…at least one of them, that the EQXX model is successful with its near-weightless aluminum brake rotors, as opposed to traditional cast-iron or carbon-ceramic discs.
As one should expect, Mercedes-Benz stuffed the Vision EQXX with various high-qualities in-car features. Starting with the 4.25-inch touchscreen (which will likely be much bigger in the production version), in which one test model was programmed in 8K resolution via a video-game engine. While in some ways that might seem a bit distracting, we got to hand it to the engineer for providing such excellent graphics, along with a vastness of information. One reviewer said that the display featured interactive navigation data, which was easily programmable.
Going beyond gadgets and gizmos, the German automaker has already confirmed what to expect regarding the vehicle’s powertrain. Developed in a reworked rear-drive version of the new EQB SUV, set to reach production by 2024. The company was able to learn a lot regarding the overall development from the brand’s Formula specialists, who were able to put together the concept’s battery, making it 50 percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than the comparably energetic EQS. Elements such as fungi upholstery to the near-skeletal aluminum rear subframe on the chassis, the EQXX has received several material advancements that will surely extend to further models within the Mercedes-Benz brand.
