All Of The Latest On The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG
The hype surrounding the fully electrified Mercedes-Benz G-Class started in 2018 at the Detroit Auto Show. It was at this event that Diether Zetsche, which at the time was Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, shared the company’s big plans for its full-on electric transition, including the famous G-Wagen. The Concept EQG was eventually unveiled in 2021 as the first fully-electric G-Class truck.
What’s even more intriguing about the Mercedes EQG concept is that it flaunts iconic design elements that created the G-Wagen’s utilitarian style. “For us, the most important thing was to keep the full G-Class DNA but beam it into the EQ age: Like the G-Class but different,” said Gordon Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler Group. “This car epitomizes the fusion of state-of-the-art, off-road capabilities with the dawn of electric mobility that we all need to strive for.”
Autoblog reports that everything is good to go for the newest Mercedes-Benz concept. It will launch either mid-2023 or later that year as a 2024 model. This news was confirmed by none other than Ola Källenius, the current Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG. On top of this, there are reports last fall, Källenius took the production-centered prototype for a test run at the same facility where the company produces the gas-powered version in Graz, Austria. Ultimately, he came out certain that future Mercedes-Benz off-roaders are going electric.
Despite this, the luxury brand is keeping a tight lip regarding the figures for the specs and performance of its all-new EQG electric SUV. According to Car and Driver, the latest concept turned production model could possess chassis and suspension hardware comparable to the regular G-Class truck, along with an independent front suspension and a bespoke rigid axle at the rear. If we’re basing it on the 2021 concept, it’s possible that the upcoming EQG could involve four electric motors and a suitably-sized battery pack on an average ladder frame architecture.
Moreover, the EQG will make its grand entrance with some off-roading hardware that’s never been seen in the concept. It involves a moveable two-speed gearbox to modify itself to any road condition. At the same time, the low center of gravity for the fully-electric powertrain makes it skilled in handling journeys on and off the road.
Some cool exterior touches include conventional round headlights, a boxy silhouette, and EQ touches, such as a black panel front grille with 3D-effect illuminated three-pointed stars and a plethora of white LED lighting around the front grille, the company’s logo, and the highlight surrounds. There is also a white LED light bar in the front and a red LED light strip in the back of the car’s custom flat roof rack, all elements we hope will make it to the production model.
The EQG seems to hold its own at the back with the absence of an exposed spare tire. Instead, it has what the company called a “wall box,” a lockable storage bin with white LED accent lighting to lodge small cargo or the truck’s charging cables.
Although we have a bit of a wait on our hands, it’s comforting to know that the G-Class is joining the Benz family’s all-electric EQS, EQE, and EQB comrades towards an all-electric future.
