All The Ways Mercedes-Benz EQB Totally Outranks Tesla’s Model Y SUV
Tesla may seem like the big guy in charge when it comes to electric vehicles, but just because something gets a lot of attention, that doesn’t mean it’s worth all the publicity. The Mercedes-Benz EQB doesn’t need a lot of hype because its quality speaks for itself. Here are all the ways why.
Price
The 2023 Tesla Model Y has a starting price of $54,990 (plus destination fee). The Long Range trim is the cheapest option, featuring a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain. As of yet, shoppers can’t order its single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration in the U.S.
Instead, the Performance setup that also has AWD is available, starting at $58,990 (plus destination fee). It comes with white paint and black synthetic leather upholstery.
Alternatively, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB’s base-level 300 model starts at $54,500 (plus destination fee). It comes with two electric motors and standard AWD (more bang for your buck). Then, the more energetic 350 trim is still slightly lower than Teslas at $58,050 (plus destination fee).
Interior Features
The Model Y SUV’s infotainment system may have plenty of features, but that doesn’t mean they work well. The setup is quite complex, as it controls pretty much everything in the car, with buttons and knobs almost completely nonexistent. While that may seem like a plus, consider that
Hyundai recently announced that they were going to keep some level of knobs in their vehicles because relying too much on a touchscreen posed a safety issue. Seriously, why is it necessary to scroll through endlessly just to adjust the AC?
The Model Y also lacks a gauge cluster, as well as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto–basic stuff. Rather, they expect users to connect to the internet, navigation, music, etc, using an over-the-top infotainment system.
The glorious EQB on the other hand involves the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, which fuses a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster with a 10.2-inch touch screen. While this setup is quite modern, it still remains user-friendly. There’s even a touchpad and toggle controls for easier use.
This Mercedes genius also includes an advanced navigation system, together with a virtual assistant feature that gives way to voicing several useful commands. The automaker also did its job by having standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Ride and Handling
Lastly, the Model Y acts more like it’s trying to compete on the race track than it does as a large SUV. We’ll give it that. This SUV also features a highly functioning regenerative braking system that returns energy to the battery and has one-pedal driving…and that’s where the fun stops. The ride is firmer than it should be and, at some parts, might be quite harsh, especially over rougher road surfaces.
Meanwhile, the EQB is a pro with its responsive steering and highly maneuverable skills, even when making challenging twists and turns. Its brakes are also stupendous when stopping.
While some argue that the EQB’s regenerative braking isn’t as refined as Tesla’s, it’s still considered a winner in this segment. Its chill and relaxed ride, particularly on roads, makes it our top choice.
