Amazon Prepares For An Electrified Order From Mercedes-Benz
The multinational e-commerce god, Amazon has recently ordered 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz, making an extra addition to their 100,000 electric delivery vehicles it has on order with electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian.
In 2019, Amazon declared a new initiative dubbed “The Climate Pledge.” This scheme involves a commit across the company that it will be carbon-neutral, and as part of this latest undertaking, Amazon revealed that it ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans with Rivian. This company was founded in 2009 and is known for developing vehicles, products, and services concerned with sustainable transportation.
Recently, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would be apart of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, and in addition to this, they have been given a considerable order of electric vans from the cybercorporation, even though it’s not as striking as Rivian’s order.
More specifically, Amazon has ordered, “more than 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans.” The order consists of about 600 medium-sized eVito electric vans and more than 1,200 vehicles eSprinter electric vans that are large in size.
Marcus Breitschwerdt, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, gave his remarks on the announcement:
“I am delighted that we are further intensifying our long-standing partnership with Amazon and working together on the battery-electric future of transportation. With the eVito and the eSprinter, we have electric vehicles in our portfolio, which are ideally suited for the requirements of the courier-, express-, and parcel-service industry for goods delivery on the so-called ‘last mile’ in terms of their equipment and range. They show that local emission-free driving, convincing performance, comfort and low operating costs can be combined perfectly.”
The luxury German automaker also revealed that they will begin delivering the vehicles towards the end of 2020 in Europe. By next year, Rivian’s electric delivery van for Amazon will arrive.
It was just last year that Mercedes-Benz revealed the initial details about the electric counterpart of the favored Sprinter. The eSprinter is geared with a battery capacity of 55 kWh for “an estimated range of 150 kilometers with a maximum payload of 900 kilograms.”
Mercedes-Benz states that there will be “a second battery option” with a “capacity of 41 kWh” that “allows the payload to be increased by around 140 kilograms to a total of 1,040 kilograms with a range of about 115 kilometers.”
According to the company, the brand also has the eVito, a mid-size van with a 41.4 kWh battery pack for a range “around 150 km” (93 miles).
Thanks to an 84 kW electric motor, the van can attain a top speed of up to 120 km/h (74 mph).
