Exploring The Wonders Of The Adventurous and Electric Mercedes-Benz EQG

October 24th, 2022 by

Mercedes-Benz’s pursuit of decking out its lineup in electrified glory involves the ever-popular G-Class. The luxury car manufacturer revealed the production model over a year ago, known as the Concept EQG. Though specifics are still at bay, comments from brand officials are starting to show a compelling picture of what the actual EQG will offer when it finally comes our way.

Mercedes-Benz Group’s chairman of the board of management, Ola Källenius, drove an early prototype of the EQG concept, telling Motor Trend that the truck will have “phenomenal performance on and off the road.” He described it as “competent” and “easy to ride in.”

While the posh brand hasn’t revealed too many details regarding the powertrain, the concept did make a grand debut while sporting four electric motors, which we know will be part of the production version. These motors function independently and operate with their shiftable two-speed gearbox. Mercedes-Benz released a video earlier this year (2022) with the EQG displaying impressive turning skills, precisely a 360-degree spin on its own axis. During this time, the carmaker also disclosed that the electric vehicle would involve a uniquely constructed rigid rear axle and an independent front suspension.

Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz has a new platform mounting its EVs, dubbed EVA2. Despite this, the G-Class isn’t utilizing it. Based on a report by Motor Trend, this vehicle will reside on a dedicated platform. “It is its own vehicle, full stop, and it will remain its own vehicle,” Källenius mentioned to the automobile magazine. Another difference with the EQG is its optional silicon anode battery that the company will offer in the model. It will provide a 20 to 40 percent increase in energy density but come at a premium cost.

There is more in store for battery technologies for the German automaker, as Mercedes-Benz is also making moves through developing lithium-iron phosphate batteries for base-level vehicles. On top of this, the company is co-developing a new battery cell with Stellantis and ACC.

The Mercedes-Benz EQG will be released in 2024, allowing the automaker a great deal of time to cultivate the product. It’s expected that the automaker will offer the SUV with several powertrain and battery configurations. The starting price hasn’t been revealed yet, but the G-Class is still a fan favorite among consumers. Last year, sales reached new heights with its latest record, and this eagerness will only aid in the brand cashing in the checks and creating even more innovations. We’re sure we’ll learn more about this truck in the coming months. In the meantime:

While we might have a bit of a wait on our hands, it’s nice to know that the G-Class is joining the Benz family’s all-electric EQS, EQE, and EQB comrades toward an all-electric future.
