Mercedes-Benz Advances Its Capabilities By Launching Its Operating System For Its 2024 Debut
Mercedes Operating System
Each and every year, a wealth of computer-operated features are implemented in cars, with the number increasing more than we can keep track of. This pace is set to increase even further with autonomous technologies and the (IoT) Internet of things progress.
Car makers are becoming aware that they need an operating system that is strong and powerful enough to control the features of their models, and some of them have decided to construct a system of their own as opposed to using an off-the-shelf system such as the Google company’s Android.
The most recent automaker to announce their own system is the Daimler company’s, Mercedes-Benz, which last month, said they are advancing the new MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System) for release in 2024. Additionally, the Volkswagen Group per their in-house software development company Cariad is building up their own OS, along with their own computer chips in response to this year’s microchip shortage.
Mercedes-Benz intended to employ 3,000 software engineers to progress the OS, with a third of these workers developing a new software hub at the company’s central development site in Sindelfingen, Germany. Surplus software hubs will be established in cities worldwide involving Berlin, Tel Aviv, Seattle, Sunnyvale, Beijing, Tokyo, and Bangalore.
According to Sajjad Khan, chief technology officer at Mercedes-Benz, software forms the “central nervous system” of the car and longer down the line, the company will bank on in-house development for over 60% of the software it uses.
This will go further than systems that are car-specific, rather it will involve those ranging from cloud systems and the IoT. On top of this, the OS will enable updates and advancements over the entire life cycle of the car as this is attainable thanks to smartphones and other electronic devices.
Moreover, the new OS will give Mercedes-Benz new prospects to increase their revenues, for example, they can offer subscriptions to virtual features that can be turned on or off by the owner after they purchase the vehicle. The automaker has also mentioned that they plan on generating as much as 1 billion euros (approximately $1.2 billion) in EBIT profits from its digital services as early as 2025.
Lastly, the automaker has already proven itself to be a success through the use of in-house developed software, owing to its awe-inspiring MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, which is easier to use than your beloved Apple or Android-powered smartphone.
More On The MBUX Infotainment System
The Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system has plenty of elements that are worth getting excited about, such as the unnamed virtual assistant, in which users can input addresses and tune their preferred radio station through a voice control setup. It also has a broader range of systems like Amazon Echo and Google Home.
