A Mercedes-Benz EV sedan prototype was recently spotted. While details about the prototype remain under wraps, the sedan is believed to be riding on Mercedes’ new Modular Architecture platform which was made specifically for the automaker’s smaller EVs. As of late, Mercedes-Benz has been focused on EVs having revealed the all-electric G-Wagon and hybrid AMG® SL 63 S E Performance. The automaker has also opened its first charging station, the first of many in the Southeastern US. This focus leads us to the latest prototype, which aims to set the foundation for ultra-fast charging with its new architecture. We’ll explore the new platform and see what consumers can expect from this new Mercedes-Benz prototype.

Prototype Spotted Riding On New Architecture

A new prototype from Mercedes-Benz was recently spotted. Appearing as a new electric sedan, the prototype is believed to ride on Mercedes’ new Modular Architecture platform. Designed for smaller EVs, this platform uses an 800-volt architecture to support ultra-fast charging. The German automaker revealed this new platform at the Munich auto show earlier this year with a Concept CLA sedan. This leads us to believe that the new prototype may be a production version of the CLA.

As for the suspected performance specifications, Mercedes-Benz has stated that the new platform will support 250kW fast charging and feature a 2-speed transmission. With this type of charging capability, owners could see up to hundreds of miles of range in just 30 minutes. Going back to the Concept CLA, the concept EV sedan sported a single rear-mounted electric motor that delivered 235 horsepower. It also featured a 2-speed transmission and had a battery range of about 400 miles.

Much of what we know about the Mercedes-Benz Modular platform comes from the Concept CLA electric sedan. The German automaker has considered using the CLA name for a new line of EVs so the latest prototype could be just that. Other theories indicate that this new electric sedan is similar to the C-class, while others suspect it may fall within the EQC segment. Either way, new EVs, especially ones with increased capabilities and features, are welcome. We’ll be staying tuned for more information, but we suspect we’ll be seeing an all-new EV from Mercedes-Benz very soon.
