Mercedes-Benz Is Augmenting Infotainment Systems With ChatGPT
Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft have recently joined forces to bring an exciting addition to Mercedes-Benz cars in the U.S. As part of this collaboration, Microsoft’s innovative “generative artificial intelligence” software called ChatGPT will be integrated into Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
The luxury automaker already flaunts voice-command capabilities that enable drivers to interact by saying, “Hey, Mercedes,” followed by a specific command to perform various tasks such as adjusting the temperature, finding navigation destinations, or making phone calls. With the integration of ChatGPT, developed by Microsoft, these voice commands can be further enhanced to provide a more seamless and natural conversational experience.
Beyond basic commands, integrating ChatGPT into Mercedes-Benz vehicles will enable a more human-like and natural conversation experience. This advanced system will be able to remember the context of previous discussions and engage in back-and-forth dialogues with drivers and passengers. With ChatGPT, the scope of requests that can be made to the system expands significantly, even encompassing topics unrelated to the car or driving. Drivers might inquire about a quick recipe, or seek advice on the best time of the year for a trip to Colorado. The integration of ChatGPT opens up a world of interactive possibilities, making the in-car experience more dynamic, informative, and engaging for occupants.
In addition to its conversational capabilities, the ChatGPT system can seamlessly interact with various applications to perform tasks beyond the car-related realm. Microsoft has highlighted that ChatGPT has the ability to assist with making restaurant reservations or purchasing movie tickets, among other functions.
Starting from June 16 (2023), Mercedes-Benz owners in the United States who have the MBUX “infotainment” system can participate in the beta testing of the ChatGPT system. By simply using the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program,” they can express their interest in being a part of the testing phase. This allows Mercedes owners to experience and provide feedback on the ChatGPT system’s performance and contribute to its further development and refinement.
Online, ChatGPT has been utilized for various tasks such as conducting research, composing essays, making stock predictions, and occasionally, delivering helpful responses to individuals in distressing situations.
In the past decade, automotive manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, have made significant advancements in their voice command systems for vehicles. These systems are promoted as safer alternatives to buttons or touchscreens since they allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road. However, research indicates that the cognitive load associated with using voice commands can still be distracting for drivers.
For those who have been following the style of Mercedes-Benz, this collaboration isn’t too surprising. The company has been known to push boundaries and break trends throughout its automotive rein, particularly in regard to technologies.
Still, ChatGPT isn’t nearly as old as the German powerhouse, and only time will tell the best way to use this system to our advantage. In the meantime, check out our online new car inventory at John Sisson Motors. We sell a wide range of vehicles from the Mercedes-Benz brand in various styles.
