Mercedes-Benz Is Implementing Vision EQXX Tech On Its Production Models
Deluxe German automaker, Mercedes-Benz has announced that the technology displayed in the Vision EQXX concept, will be transferred to regular production models in 2024.
Regarding the concept that was shown at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), a spokesperson for the company spoke to Move Electric: “Our EQXX is a research vehicle designed to push boundaries and explore options for future production vehicles. It is a blueprint for series production. Many innovations from this technology program will soon find their way into our production vehicles”.
In other words, this transfer won’t only involve technological gadgets and actual components but also the process utilized in the 18-month development period of the EQXX will make their way to production, along with the “highly agile, multi-disciplinary development approach as well as the software and digital tools used during the development process.”
In spite of its sub-10 kWh/100 km efficiency, enabling the EQS to drive on 621 miles or 1,000 real-world driving range, the Vision EQXX seemed to be the closest to production than other research vehicles for the automaker. The concept is fully functional and legal to drive on the street with all of its mechanical components, together with a rear-mounted 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) electric motor and a bespoke 900V lithium-ion battery pack that has a capacity of`100 kWh. It was also geared with the same MBUX infotainment system featured in the current Mercedes-Benz lineup, fused into the posh 47.5-inch 8k touchscreen that covers the entire dashboard.
Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz chief technology officer, said: “There are many, many elements of the vehicle which are very close to moving into series production, We can look at the shape and form of the vehicle, and we are very close to the series car that we are going to see in 2024 with all the ingredients to make it one of the most efficient electric vehicles that exist.”
The first production vehicle flaunting EQXX characteristics will arrive in 2024, and will potentially be the upcoming EQC. This sedan is considered to be the electric counterpart of the C-Class, sitting below the larger EQE and EQS. Backing this claim, the chief designer of Mercedes-Benz, Gordon Wagener, said that the EQXX was at least one segment smaller than the EQE. With that said, it would be truly remarkable if the EQC arrived with more impressive specs than the flagship EQS.
Although the EQS sedan, which is ready for production, may not complement the 0.17 Cd aerodynamic coefficient of the EQXX concept, it could draw close, advantaging from the know-how of the Mercedes team, with its designers and engineers. The EQC will be derived from the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) that will support all of the compact and midsize cars of the future Mercedes-Benz range.
