Mercedes-Benz Surprises Its Fans By Offering $7,400 Less On The 2022 EQS Sedan Than The S-Class

Mercedes-Benz is known for giving its customers a lot of bang for their buck, and normally it’s a large buck at that. Surprisingly enough, the opulent automaker is charging $7,400 less for its EQS model than its gasoline-powered S-Class counterpart. The manufacturer says that its flagship EV will have a starting price of $102,310, (plus destination fee) as it arrives at dealerships by fall of this year.

The reason why this move is considered a shock to the automotive community is that it’s not too common for battery-powered cars to have a lower price than their gasoline equivalents, even more so with a car of this stature. Here’s something else to consider, large battery packs, muli-motors and intricate electric systems are what usually cause a car to cost thousands more than those powered by conventional internal combustion powertrains. In a rare twist, however, this concept has been turned in reverse with the 2022 EQS being $7,490 less than that of the entry-level S-Class, which starts at $109,800, (plus destination fee).

The EQS will make its introduction with two models: the EQS 450+ and the EQS 580 4MATIC®. The RWD EQS 450+ has a powertrain that has an output of 329 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It has an acceleration rate that reaches from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 130 mpg. At the same time, the AWD EQS 580 4MATIC® has a powertrain that is even more (potent), it can generate 516 horsepower and 611 lb-ft of torque. It can reach up to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and mirror the maximum speed as the 450+. The EPA-rated range is not yet known, but we do know that both interiors encompass the 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system.

Regardless of your particular preference, you’ll have three different trim levels to choose from. The first is the Premium model, which has a starting price of $102,310, (plus destination fee) and $119,110, (plus destination fee). It has an array of (special) features such as 64-color ambient lighting, a Burmester 3-D Sound System and a (hearty) driver assistance suite. Next is the Exclusive trim, which begins at $105,710, (plus destination fee) and $122,510, (plus destination fee) for the 580 4MATIC®. It offers all of the features from the Premium, along with four-zone climate control, massaging front seats and a head-up display. Last is the highest-ranking Pinnacle model, which has a starting price of $108,510, (plus destination fee) and $125,310, (plus destination fee) for the 580 4MATIC®. These buyers will get everything on the lesser trims, together with a center console and rear seats that are more comfortable.

Hopefully, if there aren’t any more unexpected issues with the supply chain, both the 2022 S-Class and EQS should arrive in dealerships at their expected due date, in fall. While there are still some Mercedes-Benz fans that are still on the fence about this new electrified move, these prices are making it clear that an environmentally-friendly future isn’t such a far fetched idea after all.
