Mercedes-Benz Ups Its Electrification Game With A New Mechanical Feature

March 6th, 2023 by

A familiar issue that occurs with most electric vehicles with dual motors is the reduced driving range when adding the second motor. The only way to increase the driving range and a second motor is through a larger battery pack unless Mercedes-Benz has anything to say about it.

Mechanical Upgrades

Upcoming Mercedes-Benz models like the EQS sedan, EQS SUV, and EQE sedan will have a Disconnect Unit (DCU). This unit is already utilized in European versions of the EQE SUV. The DCU separates the front motor when certain conditions are met, lessening drag losses and bolsters the entire driving range.

The front motor and gearbox on dual-motor models will be inactive; however, when the system requires it, the front motor and gearbox will automatically engage with action from the driver. While this won’t enable these dual-motor cars to succeed in the same driving range as single-motor EVs, it will enrich the driving range over similar dual-motors not geared with the DCU system.

Another newly standard gadget for the EQE, EQS, and EQS SUV is a heat pump. The ritzy automaker provides dubs this item Intelligent Thermal Management (ITM). This system, already used on the EQS SUV, allows EVs to progress driving range during cooler temperatures.

According to InsideEVs, the upcoming EQS 580 4MATIC® models are getting more horsepower to pair up with the EQS 580 4MATIC® SUV. In other words, both EQS sedans will have an output of 536 hp.
