Mercedes-Benz’s EQS Goes Head-To-Head With With The Tesla Model S

Ahead of deliveries scheduled later this summer, production examples of Mercedes-Benz’s 2022 EQS have begun rolling off the assembly line in Sindelfingen, Germany. Earlier this month, the electric flagship was fully unveiled, showing off various futuristic technologies, involving an available Hyperscreen that stretches across the entire dashboard as well as the rear-axle steering. This sedan is currently being constructed at Factory 56 beside the upcoming gas-powered Sl-Class, which has received its own redesign for the 2021 model year and was revealed late in 2020.

When the EQS goes on sale, buyers will have the option of selecting between a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) for the EQS 450+ and the dual-motor, 4MATIC® all-wheel-drive (AWD) for the 580 model. The single-motor will produce an energetic 329 hp with 406 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor will bring out a melt-your-skin-off 516 hp with 616 lb-ft of torque. Based on the WLTP test, the EQS is rated at 479 miles. At the same time, the EPA figure, which will be announced around the EQS’s U.S. launch, and should likely sit above 400 miles.

“The future of our global Mercedes-Benz production network begins with EQS production in Factory 56: This future is CO2-neutral, sustainable, fully digitalized, connected, and highly flexible,” said Jörg Burzer, member of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz AG, responsible for production and supply-chain management. “The start of production of the EQS is a highlight in our unprecedented electric vehicle initiative in the production area. In 2022, a total of eight Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles will be produced at seven locations on three continents.”

At first glance, the dual-motor’s 516 hp may seem exciting, especially with its 4.1-second launch time of 60 mph, and while it certainly is, some may prefer to wait to stand by until the AMG® version and its performance numbers are revealed.

No matter which model you prefer, be prepared to spend about 100 grand, and that’s before even thinking about the options. Official pricing for this sedan will be revealed around the launch date, but it is expected to range high in the thousands.

The EQS will inevitably draw serious attention not just for its capabilities but how it matches up against its rival, the long-running Tesla Model S. The competing sedan has been on dealership lots since 2012, receiving updates here and there. Interestingly, Tesla’s liftback was forced to halt production at the beginning of 2021, together with the Model X, due to supplier issues. Despite this setback, the Californian automaker revealed a slight exertion refresh to its car, as well as more detailed interior advancements like a new screen and an available yoke-style (yes you read that right) steering wheel.

As incredible as Mercedes-Benz’s EQS, the real value for the company will likely come from the volume of electric SUVs that are priced at a wallet-friendly $50,000 (plus destination fee). For instance, the EQB will prove to be more important in the electrified race for the next few years.
