The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB SUV Makes Its First Appearance In China
The 2022 EQB Is The GLB’s Electrified Twin
Only a few days after the pish-posh Mercedes-Benz released their flagship EQS sedan, the German luxury automaker uncovered its new EQB crossover SUV. Seen as an electric GLB version, the seven-seater subcompact is the fourth electric model from the car company, and is set to arrive in North America by 2022.
Although certain characteristics such as the sheet metal and glass seem to mirror each other, the styling department, run by the chief design officer, Gordon Wagener, has made the layout of the car a bit more refined and polished. The face sports the trademark EQ headlight/fascia roundup, with a light bar stretching across the entire nose. This feature is matched on the back end, where it also rocks a horizontal light bar. Additionally, there are EQ-exclusive colors and wheels, as well as the option of regular or AMG®-Line front and rear bumpers.
The EQB also took styling cues from the GLB in the cabin, however, just like the body of the car, it comes with a particular color palette for its platform, as well as trims options, like Wagener’s favorite rose gold. Some of the interior space can prove to be a bit snug due to the battery packs within the floor, in fact, the automaker has warned that the third row would be more suitable for passengers up to 5’5″, with the trunk space also being a bit tight. Be that as it may, the EQB subcompact still offers more space than it usually would for its outer dimensions.
The EQB made its debut in China, at the Shanghai Auto Show, this past Sunday (April, 18). There, the SUV will make its launch and come as a package deal with standard AMG® Line design, all-wheel drive, and two motors that make a combined 288 horsepower. Europe will receive both the EQB350 4MATIC® with an output of about 268 horsepower and the front-wheel-drive EQB250 coming at 221 horsepower. Moreover, there will be a mid level variant made to be a long-range model. Both China and Europe should see the EQB arrive on dealership lots by this year.
Those in North America will have to wait patiently until 2022, as the Mercedes-Benz is kept coy about the potential powertrain options, only saying “Stay tuned for more details in the coming months,”
When the EQB arrives in North America (in the middle of 2022 as 2023 model), it’s expected that pricing will start around $40,000, (plus destination fee) for base-level models. The performance of the car is also expected to fall below the GLB 250, and this is despite the EQB sharing the same model number. While the SUV is on the same level as the flagship EQS, it will still be in no doubt impressive and innovative in its abilities and will serve as a great vehicle for families.
