The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Powertrain Gets Electrified Update

October 25th, 2021 by

The luxury German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz will be providing an electric augmentation to its base-level GLE 300d 4MATIC®. This will be held for the vehicle’s 2022 model year in Europe. A 48V mild-hybrid system will be tacked on, which improves both the performance and effectiveness. This new and improved 4MATIC® is set to go on sale in its home market by November, with the GLE getting the brand’s second-generation integrated starter-generator along with a 48V onboard electrical system.

Functions that include gliding, boost, and recuperations are new to this mid-size SUV. The MHEV configuration can jack up the powertrain with a surplus of 15kW and 200Nm for short periods.

According to a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz Australia, the recently announced changes are “specific to overseas markets, and there are no changes to announce regarding our local GLE line-up at this stage.”

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine in the entry-level GLE has also received some enhancements, as it is currently constructing 200kW (4200rpm) and 550 Nm (1800-2200rpm). At the moment, the GLE 300d (sans) 48V tech produces 180kW and 500Nm.

It can supposedly accelerate from 0-100 in 6.8 seconds, and this is each of its body styles, which is an improvement of 0.4 seconds.

According to the opulent car maker, the 48V-geared GLE 300d “allows significant fuel savings,” and at the same time, firing up the engine so “quickly and comfortably” that “the start-stop function is almost imperceptible.”

Depending on its specification, the GLE 300d 4MATIC® Wagon can allegedly use 6.1-7.5L/100km on the combined WLTP cycle, while the GLE 300d 4MATIC® Coupe claims to have 6.5-7.1L/100km. On top of this, the company has revamped the 4-cylinder model’s 4MATIC® all-wheel-drive system.

The GLE 300d crossovers previously featured a transfer case with a fixed 50:50 torque split. Still, now, the revised model comes with a transfer case with an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch that can carry over 100 percent of torque between the axles.

Sporting a title ‘Torque on Demand, ‘the new all-wheel-drive system allegedly offers an improvement on driving safety and agility on the road, and even more so when cornering, “specifically influencing the yaw movement to induce vehicle oversteer or understeer.”

On top of this, the newest GLE SUV has experienced nothing but success on the runaway in Australia, making up more than 20 percent of all premium large SUV sales (after combining the sales of the wagon and coupe ranges).

Additionally, some of the 2605 GLE Wagons and 807 GLE Coupes came to be registered year-to-date, starting September 30th. This equals 16.0 and 5.0 percent market share accordingly.

This new model comes along ahead of the BMW X5 (2454 sales YTD) and X6 (437 sales YTD), which gives it the lead in the segment in 2021, so far.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d 4MATIC® is set to arrive in European showrooms the following month from 75,053.30 euros ($87,300) for the GLE 300 d 4MATIC® and 79,182.60 euros ($92,100) for a less practical body style. While it’s still unknown when or if this model is coming to the States, we can be sure that whatever comes from this reliable automaker will be nothing short of extraordinary.
