The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Is A Lean Mean SUV
2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is the delightful combination of the EQS sedan and…well an SUV. The brand already has a history of introducing a larger version of a car for each segment, and the same rings true of their new EQ models.
Last Tuesday, April 19, the company revealed its latest EQ creation, with a larger version of the flagship sedan…in an electrified form of course. It keeps its 126-inch wheelbase but adds 7.8 inches of height.
The styling of the EQS SUV is comparable to the EQE and EQB, along with the familiar front fascia’s headlights and grille from the EQS sedan, the same ringing true for the taillight. Below, the running boards are infused into the body and help with the vehicle’s aerodynamics, though we’ll have to wait for the manufacturer to share the official drag coefficient.
Inhouse, the SUV is covered in materials that are soft to the touch, regardless of whether its leather spread throughout or the special new rosewood trim with stainless steel Mercedes-Benz started pressed into it. Second-row seaters can also slide back and forth up to 5 inches, while the third-row seats can be pushed down in order to expand the truck space from 7 cubic feet to 74 cubes (with the second row also folded).
Optional on the entry-level EQS 450 Plus SUV and standard on the EQS 580, the Hyperscreen merges a 12.3-inch gauge display, a 17.7-inch infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch passenger screen into a collective bunch. It’s responsible for running the current version of the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, which involves navigation with natural language recognition, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. This system also allows up to seven individual profiles, triggered by a fingerprint sensor or facial recognition (with the latter reserved for Hyperscreens). There are even six 100-watt USB-C ports that are useful for long road trips.
Safety features are also bountiful with standards including adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, automatic emergency braking, active lane-keeping aid, blind-spot monitoring, vehicle-to-x communication, active parking assist, and a surround-view camera.
Upon the launch of the EQS SUV, there will be two trims available: the 450 Plus and the 580. The first uses a single motor on the rear axle with an output of 355 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque, while the second jumps to 536 hp and 633 lb-ft with the addition of the electric motor on the front axle, also giving it all-wheel-drive (AWD).
There isn’t an estimated range for the 107.8-kilowatt-hour battery, however, both models are using the same pack, meaning that it can allow charging up to 200 kW. At 110kW, one can charge their battery from 10% to 80% in just half an hour. Meanwhile, the standard at-home wallbox on 240-volt power will take 11.25 hours to charge from 10% to 100%. As with the sedan model, the EQS also has multi-mode regenerative braking with an adaptive setting that allows the car to stop in traffic.
There are plenty of niceties that you aren’t too visible from the outside looking in, such as the brand’s signature 64-color ambient lighting that adds a special aura to the cabin, along with the optional winter package that heats the steering wheel, rear seats, and windshield. There is also an acoustic comfort upgrade that tacks on insulating glass for a bit more peace and quiet.
It is expected that the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will arrive at dealers in late 2022. The exact pricing is still not known but seeing how the EQS 450 Plus sedan starts at $103,660, (plus destination fee), and the EQS 580 starts at $126,950, (plus destination fee), it’s likely that the SUV will draw near to that price range.
