The AMG® C 63 May Be A Plug-In Hybrid
Is The AMG® C 63 Turning Over To The Electric Side?
Last week Tuesday, (February 23), Mercedes-Benz revealed its revamped 2022 C-Class sedan, thus, repeating its cycle of providing a jazzed-up C 63 car constructed by the automaker’s AMG® skunkworks.
Tobias Moers, former AMG® chief, let it be known in 2018 that the next C 63 model will encompass a hybrid powertrain. Last Friday (February 26) it was reported from CAR the supposed specifications of the new setup. If we take this report to heart, we can expect the powertrain to be more elaborate than what has been previously expected.
Allegedly, the powertrain will include the inline-4 that was used in the most recent generation of AMG®’s compact vehicles, which by itself can push out as much as 416 horsepower. On top of this, rather than merge this technology to a mild-hybrid system, CAR also reported that AMG® will tack on three motor-generations in a setup comparable to what appears in Formula One cars, along with the upcoming One hypercar.
In fact, one motor-generator is said to have been used in a traditional mild-hybrid setup, basically acting as a toughened starter motor and possessing the ability to recover energy by braking. An additional generator will be fixed at the rear axle to aid the engine drive the rear wheels, however, its alleged that it will also send its power to the rear wheels separate from the engine. The third and last motor-generator will be infused with the turbocharger, aiding it to spool up at low revs and also being able to recover energy from the exhaust.
The combined output of the system is said to be 550 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, which is a major increase in front of the 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of the already energetic C 63 S. On the other hand, there will be a weight penalty owing to the elaborate powertrain. A report by CAR states that the hybrid system will tack on nearly 550 pounds to the car and push its curb weight to about 4,410 pounds. Some of this weighty load is owing to the large battery that should make up around 40 miles of full electric range. One advantage, regarding the weight of the system will be a fitting weight distribution of 50:50, which is a result of weight over the front axle contrasting to the spirited C 63 caused by the smaller engine, based on the report.
Traditional basics such as a 9-speed automatic, mechanical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, adaptive suspension and a drive mode which is reported to appear in the next C 63.
Estimates on performance is said to encompass 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 181 mph. That maximum mirrors the energetic C 63 but acceleration is faster by about half a second.
According to CAR, we should be on the lookout for the C 63 by the end of the year or early 2022. Furthermore, a new C 43, which could possibly end up with a C 63 badge, is also in the works. When that time comes, we’ll keep you Mercedes-Benz lovers posted.
