The Mercedes-AMG® SL43 Looks and Acts Like A High Trim Model

At first glance, it’s hard to believe that Mercedes-Benz‘s new AMG® SL43 sports car is an entry-level model, but that just goes to show you that the company doesn’t have the word “basic” in its vocabulary. This car only has half as many cylinders as the highly adept, V-8-powered SL55 and SL 63 models, however, the SL43, uses Formula 1 technology that ensures an increased level of responsiveness from its 4-cylinder turbocharged engine.
The SL43 doesn’t just get its power from any turbocharged engine, it’s paired with an electric motor, along with traditional exhaust-gas plumbing. The production model is initially fitted to the M139 4-cylinder 2.0-liter, the same engine that powers the CLA 45 and GLA 45 AMG® models. The motor doesn’t take up too much space, as it’s only about an inch and a half thick and fixed on the shaft between the turbine wheel and compressor wheel. The reason for this is that the motor is able to the spin the compressor wheel before the exhaust gases do, lessening turbo lag, allowing for an almost immediate response when the driver nails the throttle, and sustaining boost pressure, even when the driver takes puts their foot off the gas or hits the brakes. This technology is also used for the turbocharged 1.6-liter V-6 hybrids for the Mercedes-AMG® Formula 1 team.
The 4-cylinder powertrain pushes out a total output of 376 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, with the 48-volt, belt-driven starter-generator able to provide a temporary boost of an added 13 horses. The 48-volt configuration also makes way for the SL43 to regain energy as slows and smooths out the engine’s start-stop system.
Additionally, this is the first time that the M139 is fixed longitudinally in the SL43 and matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission with the AMG®-traditionally wet clutch pack instead of a torque converter. The company claims the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) roadster can zoom up to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds on its way to a 170 mph top speed.
There are a few minute aesthetic changes that allow the SL43 to stand out from the 55 and 63. The tailpipes are round and the rear bumper is made to be a bit more minimalistic, doing away with the vents behind the rear wheels. The front bumper is also reworked, and the 43 cruises are on standard 19-inch wheels, while the optional wheels are sized at 20- and 21- inches. For the time being, the SL hasn’t been confirmed for North American shores, with a spokesperson from the company saying that the grand tourer is “is currently still under consideration for the U.S. market.” If it does end up reaching the States, we should expect that it will be much cheaper than the SL55, which will likely cost around $135,000, (plus destination fee).
