Daimler AG and Geely Holding Team Up To Produce Hybrid Powertrains
Daimler AG and Geely Holding, the parent companies of Mercedes-Benz AG and Volvo Cars, have announced their intention to work together in creating highly advanced powertrain systems for next-generation hybrid vehicle applications.
As stated by Daimler’s press release, the two companies “work together on hybrid powertrain solutions to enhance their global competitiveness and create true economies of scale.” This partnership may also encompass engineering, sourcing, industrialization, and efficiency measures.
Both brands are on the same page when it comes to viewing effectual drivetrain technologies as the heart of the present metamorphosis of the automotive industry, and want to speed the process of emission-free driving. R&D networks will be used by the companies to conspire on a next-generation gasoline engine made for hybrid applications to be constructed at the automakers’ European and Chinese powertrain facilities; This may also be eventually used by Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

By 2039, our ambition is a completely carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet. The consequent electrification of our powertrain portfolio therefore is an integral part of our drivetrain strategy. To this end, we are systematically converting our portfolio, so that by 2030 more than half of our passenger car sales will be comprised of plug-in hybrids or purely electric vehicles. We are looking forward to the future; when, together with Volvo’s ICE unit and Geely, we will further extend our synergies in the field of highly efficient drivetrain systems in China and the world. At Mercedes-Benz, the newly established unit Mercedes-Benz Drive Systems will spearhead the project and create cost efficiencies.”

The Geely Holding Group is working with Mercedes-Benz on a thorough strategy for its drivetrains, which is being dubbed “Ambition 2039”. With this plan, the famous german automaker is persistently making the push towards “Electric first”, which is the transition for all of their car models and their variants from gasoline-powered engines to electric.
Together, Daimler and Geely will feed off each others strengths as well as their global resources to construct and put out highly advanced powertrain systems.
