G 550: The Core Benchmark

Don’t mistake the entry G 550 for a decontented placeholder. It trades the old V-8 for a high-tech 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo featuring an electric auxiliary compressor that virtually eliminates low-end turbo lag.

You get 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 miles per hour (MPH) in 5.3 seconds. An integrated starter-generator layers in another 20 horsepower and 184 pound-feet when demand peaks. Crucially, it shares the exact same rugged ladder frame, lockable differentials, and transfer case as its higher-priced stablemates.

G 580 with EQ Technology: The Four-Motor Electric Vehicle (EV)

Stepping up to the electric G 580 shifts the driving mechanics entirely. Mercedes placed an individual electric motor at each wheel, letting all four work independently. Combined output reaches 579 horsepower and a massive 859 pound-feet of torque, launching this heavy box to 60 MPH in 4.6 seconds.

Power feeds from a 116-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack providing an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles. Hooked to a 200-kilowatt (kW) DC fast charger, it recharges from 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes. Selectable low-range gearing remains intact, keeping genuine off-road capability alive.

AMG® G 63: Unapologetic Performance

At the top stands the AMG® G 63, the exact vehicle most people picture when hearing the name. Its handcrafted 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo makes 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, pushing from 0 to 60 MPH in just 4.2 seconds.

Each engine is assembled and signed by a single craftsman. Mild-hybrid assistance and cylinder management can shut down four cylinders during light cruising to curb fuel burn. Subtlety isn’t on the menu here, and at nearly $200,000, restraint isn’t what buyers are paying for anyway.

Shared DNA Across the Lineup

Cross-shopping the trio reveals how much core architecture remains identical. All three ride on a 113.8-inch wheelbase, seat five comfortably, and retain the classic side-hinged rear door. Skipping a third row was intentional; keeping the original body geometry leaves a square 37.4 cubic feet cargo hold that behaves much larger than its paper specs suggest.

Throw in permanent all-wheel drive, three sequentially lockable differentials, and 7,000 pounds of towing capacity, and the fundamental G-Wagon formula remains unbroken regardless of which engine you select.
