The Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT, specifically its 4-Door Coupe model warmed our hearts when it was first introduced to the car market in 2019, and received a few subtle enhancements for 2022. This update, however, only applied to its 6-cylinder models, since the V8 versions couldn’t be sold due to supply chain issues.
The GT V8 came back stronger than ever for the 2023 model year, and this time, it brought along a few nips and tucks in the aesthetics departments and even some new gadgets. On top of this, there is a new range-topping plug-in hybrid, named the GT 63S E Performance 4-Door Coupe. Last summer, the company revealed that this model delivers up to 843 hp, with the repeated use of the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 providing 643 hp and a rear-mounted electric motor that tacks on 204 hp, but only momentarily.
Wrapping up these offerings are the GT 63 and GT 63S grades. It’s worth noting, however, that they don’t foster any electrification, and their V-8 outputs stay the same with the update. The GT 63 has a max of 575 hp and the GT 63S peaks at 630 hp. In both instances, it amounts to 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3 seconds and a top speed racing over 190 mph.
Going down the line are the GT 53 and GT 43, with both featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 and an electric motor in mild-hybrid configuration. The GT 53 also has 429 hp, while the GT 43 peaks at 363 hp.
Tweaks in the styling of the V8s consist of a new front fascia with a more design and wider intakes for the flanks. The color palette has also been revamped with Starling Blue Metallic and Starling Blue Magno joining the list of choices, along with design packs with an option to add on carbon-fiber accents. Buyers that want to spruce up the interior also have more choices thanks to the brand’s Manufaktur personalization service, which involves extra choices like Nappa leather in diamond quilting.
The GT V8s also comes with standard AMG® Ride Control+ adaptive dampers for the air suspension. These dampers include separate valves for the rebound and compression, creating a damper that can enhance comfort and even driving performance. The valves react relative to information from acceleration and wheel path sensors.
Later this year, details regarding the price for the 2023 AMG® GT 4-Door Coupe range will be announced near the market launch.
Regarding the long-term future of the luxury 4-Door Coupe, there has been talk of the entire lineup phasing out after the one generation, as well as the CLS. Rather, the AMG® is expected to center on tacking on performance to the EQE and EQS electric sedan and hatchback.
