Mercedes-Benz Aims To Install Wind Turbines For A More Eco-Friendly Future
Mercedes-Benz Is Predicting Windy Skies
Mercedes-Benz is taking one giant step for man and one giant step for mankind regarding climate change. The luxury German automaker revealed its intentions to install several wind turbines at its Papenburg test track in Northern Germany.
It’s expected that this new wind farm will produce more than 100 MW output by 2025, representing over 15 percent of the brand’s annual electricity usage in Germany.
Mercedes-Benz has been making moves to go after accomplishing its climate goals, including eliminating its emissions in half by 2030 and succeeding in complete carbon neutrality by 2039.
Moreover, Mercedes-Benz differentiates itself from other automakers as it aims to commit to a fully-electric future with EV models in every segment. The revamped vehicle architectures will be centered toward electric models from 2025.
Last April, the manufacturer claimed it wanted to extend 70 percent of its energy needs by 2030 using renewable sources, up from the previous 50 percent.
More notably, at the beginning of this year, it’s expected that about 15% of solar or wind sources will be matched to the company’s facilities (more than a total of 100 locations) from sustainable energy sources.
The 5-star car company is already making its way towards its objective. From the beginning of this year, the production of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles and van plants has been carbon neutral.
Mercedes-Benz implementing wind turbines at its German test track is an additional step toward sustainability as the automaker continues pushing its efforts toward climate change.
Mercedes-Benz Lengthens Its Sustainable Portfolio, Infusing Several Wind Turbines
Mercedes-Benz recently announced its plans to construct a wind farm with an unidentified number of wind turbines.
While the company didn’t specify the number of wind turbines, it intends to build. If a wind turbine produces 2.75MW, the company will need more than 36 to achieve more than 100MW.
The automaker plans this implementation of a long-term power purchase agreement to acquire electricity from the wind farm. Jörg Burzer, a board member for Mercedes-Benz production and supply chain management, stated:
“The targeted expansion of renewable energies at our own locations is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. With the realization of the planned wind farm project in Papenburg, we are taking an important step in this direction. We make an active contribution to the energy transition and the expansion of onshore wind power in Germany.”
On top of this, Mercedes-Benz is looking over an extensive solar panel installation project at the test site. Burzer further explained:
“By installing photovoltaic systems on the roofs of our plants on a large scale, we are gradually reducing our external energy requirements.”
