Mercedes-Benz Flips Out With Its Innovative Touchscreen

July 22nd, 2021 by

Vehicles of today are geared from top to bottom with advanced technologies, and touchscreens are one of the most common features of them all. Large touchscreens, in particular, are all the rage. However, the bigger they are, the harder it is to find a distinction between the growing competition. It is for this very reason that the new 2022 AMG® Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster will be doing things a bit differently by moving the screen from the dashboard, fixing it to the center console while letting it robotically flip up and down.

You read that right, Mercedes-Benz’s latest and greatest sedan now has a screen that does flippy tricks. The automaker said that it constructed the 11.9-inch portrait screen in order to solve the issue of dealing with glare, but more or less, this is a ritzy parlor game likely meant to exemplify the AMG® SL Roadster’s opulence and status, as well as a way to create contrast from Tesla.

Additionally, the new AMG® sports car includes a digital instrument cluster that stands out from the rest. Sitting behind the steering wheel, the 12.3-inch screen is hidden away in what the automaker calls a “visor” that is aviation-inspired. Essentially, its screen is fixed into the dashboard even deeper than it usually is, which in turn helps to combat glare. It’s quite plausible that these dynamic changes were brought upon as a result of complaints from customers.

The automotive trend to expand the size of their screens has put an even greater significance on software, which is the reason manufacturers ranging from Polestar to Ford are relying on powerful tech companies like Google for assistance. However, in a similar way as the ongoing state of the smartphone market, the hardware has become incredibly developed. That’s allowed new and remarkable ideas to prosper.

In a similar way to the Samsung Galaxy’s Z Fold phones, this interactive screen is certainly a different concept that we’re used to seeing luxury vehicles, or any car on the market for that matter. No doubt that this touchscreen will involve the fan-favorite MBUX infotainment system with more updated features. This system has the classic “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant with the ability to perform many functions like checking the weather, making phone calls, responding to text messages, and assisting with navigation. The best part is, that this technology can be controlled by using voice commands, hand gestures, along with using the touchscreen.

In terms of what the 2022 Roadster is really made for, the two powertrains for this vehicle will likely be the same as before, with the SL 43 and SL 53 energized by a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. If that is the case, the 43 motor would produce a giddy 429 horsepower and the 53 powertrain would get a rowdy 577 horsepower. Mercedes-Benz has also said that only a 9-speed automatic transmission would be available, but it would also offer all-wheel-drive (AWD).
