Mercedes-Benz Is A Show Stopper With Its Four Electrics For 2021 IAA Mobility Show
Last year, the annual IAA Mobility show was one of the many events that were forced to cancel in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This show is a platform where automakers and tech industries can show who’s hot stuff with various show-and-tells. This time around, the event was finally able to open to the public last week, starting Tuesday, September 7th and ending Sunday, September 12th in Munich. This is also the first time that this city has acted as a host to this particular exhibition, as it’s often held in Frankfurt.
The showcase had over 700 participants, ranging from manufacturers to technology partners, but none was more impressive than Mercedes-Benz, which has many new releases, along with launches of new production models and debut of concepts.
Mercedes-Benz EQE
When Mercedes-Benz finally decided to dive deep into EV territory, they didn’t miss a beat. This is especially true with its battery-powered EQE sedan. Consider this to be a mini-me of the flagship EQS car, with all of its wondrous technological features and glory, only slightly smaller and package of features only slightly less grand.
The EQE has an output of 288 horsepower, using its electric motor at every axle. Also, at the rear, it uses an eATS electric drivetrain that observes torque levels 10,000 times per minute, for prime management. There is also a 90 kWh battery that gives as far as 410-mile range and can even provide 155 miles within 15 minutes of recharging.
Mercedes-AMG® EQS
The AMG® division didn’t waste any time regarding high-performance on the EQS flagship. The Affalterbach team went out of their way to prove that the EV can provide a drive that is vigorous, spirited, and worthy enough to sport the AMG® badge.
This S-Class electric counterpart involves the same two-motor configuration, with both of them placed at the front and rear axle, however, AMG® has improved the output of the entry-level EQS 450+ model’s 329 hp (516 hp for the EQS 580 4MATIC®+) to 649 hp and 700 ft-lbs of torque. Then, the AMG® Dynamic Plus package in Race STart mode will temporarily bump those numbers to 751 hp and 752 ft-lbs of torque. AMG® models are also equipped with tuning from the Performance 4 Matic+ all-wheel-drive setup, which continuously examines and distributes torque to all four wheels contingent on their drive modes; The five are: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. Driving conditions also play a factor in the behavior of the 4 Matic +.
Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS
Believe it or not, Mercedes-Benz has a car that is even more luxurious than the S-Class, and that’s the Mercedes-Maybach. Considered to be at the top of its game with quality features that of a higher grade on the interior design and powertrain. At this year’s Mobility show, the automaker presented something slightly different than the Maybach…
Introducing the Maybach EQS concept! This novel electric vehicle is no longer a sedan, but an SUV; One particular that rides on 24-inch, five-spoke wheels. The design has a dual-tone paint scheme that matches Obsidian Black Metallic with Zircon Red Metallic, followed by enchanting chrome pinstripes that make the vehicle even more of a head-turner.
As the driver approaches his or her Maybach EQS, their door should open automatically, in which they will be welcomed in a cabin that is all dolled up in white and dark blue arrangement with rose-gold accents. Highlight features include the MBUX Hyperscreen spanning the width of the dashboard and a floating center console that reaches to a set of rear captain’s chairs, along with an additional infotainment system in the backseat.
This foreshadowed fully-electric SUV is reported to have a range close to 378 miles and begin production by 2022. Philip Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes-AMG® and Mercedes-Maybach was asked how close the concept was to what will be the production model, in which he replied “Oh, we are very close.”
Concept EQG
Last week, we discussed the possibility of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class pickup truck becoming an Electrified God, otherwise dubbed the EQG some time in the future. Schiemer didn’t provide too much detail, but he did indicate that the 4×4 concept, which drives on 22-inch aluminum wheels, has a ladder-frame body lodging four electric motors, a new rear axle and a two-speed gearbox, and a flush roof rack with LED lights for augmented visibility. Of course, this concept drew the most buzz with show onlookers.
These upcoming vehicles and concepts mark what’s to come in the company’s electric platform. As Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management for Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG commented, “Next year, we will have battery-electric options in every segment we serve,” Källenius says. “And by 2025, we will have at least one all-electric alternative for every model we make.”
