Mercedes-Benz Teases An SL-Based Mythos

A few weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz revealed that they would be eliminating several entry-level models, instead choosing to center most of their efforts on extending offerings in the high-end car market. In particular, this involves a new line of models that are even more exclusive than the Mayback and made with the intention of turning into a collector’s model, dubbing the title Mythos.

Gordon Wagener, Mercedes-Benz’s chief designer, gave its followers a sneak peek of what’s to come, as teaser images have been posted on Wagener’s social media account. The first model is an SL-based Mayback by the company, which the desire posted with the caption “A glimpse of the Concept Mercedes-Maybach SL – revealing more about future opportunities of our company’s most exclusive brand. For customers who desire a sophisticated luxury driving and design experience.”

In one of the images, we’re able to see a section of the car’s hood, which is sporting a three-pointed star hood ornament while sitting upright. As with some vintage Mercedes-Benz models from the 1980s and foregoing, it not only boosts the three-pointed star but other elements like a bright chrome grille surround with “Maybach” placed at the top of the edge. On the other hand, the current SL has a flush emblem, and the grille is positioned into a body-colored nose. The Maybach has a deep red paint, which is divergent with a black or dark gray hood. This hood is also plastered with a rather…interesting pattern of Maybach logos, sort of like a designer handbag.

In Wagener’s second post, we see the silhouette of an open-top car, and the caption reads “ MYTHOS Series: highly-exclusive collectible cars from Mercedes-Benz.”

While it looks as if it’s another SL-derived vehicle, it features a hard tonneau cover carved with nacelle, just like the classic race cars. The cover seemingly implies that the SL’s rear seats won’t be featured on the Mythos version. In the same effect, Mercedes-Benz has already said that this model is only meant for passengers that are 5 feet or shorter. Like the Maybach, there isn’t a visible hood ornament on the Mythos SL.

There isn’t any word on whether or not the Mythos version received mechanical upgrades. For reference, the current SL car includes in-car features like dual-zone climate control, heated seats, sun-reflecting leather upholstery, ambient cabin lighting, a power wind-blocker, Bluetooth®, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, two USB ports, and a 600-watt surround-sound audio system.

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, drowsy-driver monitoring, automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, Pre Safe pre-impact collision preparation, and pop-up roll-over protection.
