Mercedes Launch Of The 500W Electric Scooter Shows Us That The Grass Is Greener On The Other Side
Mercedes New 500W Electric Scooter
The time is now to arrive in style, but the far more affordable Mercedes-Benz way. Last week, (Oct, 2), the luxury German automaker announced the debut of their newest vehicle…if you want to call it that. This two-legged model isn’t a sedan, an SUV, or even a fast-paced AMG® coupe, but rather a folding electric scooter inventively named the eScooter.
This affordable scooter was made possible through a partnership with a Swiss-based company, Micro Mobility Systems AG. This company has been a prominent figure in the micro-mobility game for years, and believe it or not, this isn’t their first rodeo with a German-based automaker. Last year, Micro Mobility collaborated with BMW to make a last-mile electric scooter of their own.
In spite of this, it appears that the model made for Mercedes outranks BMW because of its more advanced capabilities. This top-scoring scooter has a 500W peak rated hub motor located on the front wheel, as well as suspension in both wheels and a 280Wh battery pack. Although this isn’t considered the record-breaking battery capacity for e-bikes, it’s still in the nature of last-mile electric scooters, and the automaker claims that this should be acceptable for a range of 25 km (15.5 miles).
Some critics have expressed that although the range is satisfactory for last-mile use, the 20 km/h (12 mph) top speed is going to get old real fast for those who want a bit more pep in eScooter’s step.
This latest gadget from Mercedes-Benz will also obtain wheels that are a bit larger than quite a few ones on smaller scooters and measure up to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter.
The electric bike is pretty tough and brawny, and Mercedes says that it should stand up to 5,000 km (3,000 miles) of use. If it’s actually is a last-mile vehicle, 1,500 trips appears to be pretty impressive for a vehicle that can be picked up with one’s bare hands. Weighing only 13.5 kg (29.7 lb), the average person should be able to carry it into his or her trunk…hopefully one of an EQS.
Specific details concerning the release date or price are not yet known, but luckily, we can still see the scooter in all of its glory in their recent video.
For some odd reason, there are a few other automotive brands that feel the need to outshine the hot and sexy Mercedes-Benz scooter, with their own mediocre version of micro-mobility technology.
Ford made its mark in the electric scooter wagon toward the end of 2018, then GM entered the tech game, only to quickly bow out of the e-bike market not too long ago.
SEAT, a Spanish automaker also put its foot into the electric waters and even teamed up with Barcelona-based startup, Silence on seated electric scooters, going at a faster 100 km/h (62 mph), which Czech automaker, SKODA put a unique twist on things by creating a hybrid of an electric scooter and a bicycle.
Regardless, it should be safe to say that automotive brands are attempting to configure different ways to take their shot at winning in the e-bike market, but based on the Mercedes-Benz track record of introducing game-changing technologies, it’s clear who truly has the biggest scooter.
