Stepping Inside the New Mercedes-Benz Interior Experience

Climb into a modern Mercedes-Benz, and the first thing you notice isn’t the leather; it’s the glow. Light traces the doors, sweeps across the dash, and the screens wake up before you even settle in. Then you notice the stitching and seat bolsters. Mercedes-Benz designs cabins in distinct sensory layers, and the current lineup gives you substantial control over every detail.
Screens: From Sensible to Pillar-to-Pillar
The C-Class keeps things relatively traditional. You get a 12.3-inch digital driver display paired with an 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen angled toward the driver, plenty of glass without feeling overwhelming.
Step up to the CLA or the electric GLC, and screen space expands significantly:
| Model | Display Setup | Cabin Signature |
|---|---|---|
| C-Class | Standard 12.3 in. cluster and 11.9 in. portrait touchscreen | 64-color LED ambient lighting |
| CLA | Available MBUX Superscreen (10.25 in. driver, 14 in. center, 14 in. passenger) | Fixed panoramic glass roof |
| Electric GLC | Standard dual displays; available 39.1 in. MBUX Hyperscreen | Standard panoramic roof; optional SKY CONTROL |
Crucially, the mega-screen setups remain optional. If you don’t want a dashboard that looks like a single glass slab, the standard layouts work brilliantly on their own.
What You’re Sitting On
Upholstery choices split the lineup by personality. The C-Class starts with MB-Tex, a synthetic that wipes clean in seconds and easily survives a spilled coffee. From there, material choices scale up:
- Leather: Available across models in several color options.
- Nappa Leather: Offered in five styles on the AMG® C 63 S E PERFORMANCE.
- MB-Tex/Microfiber: Standard on AMG® performance seats for extra side-to-side grip.
- Trim Accents: Modern wood and metallic finishes for floating central consoles.
Picking a bold upholstery color completely transforms the cabin atmosphere, ensuring your vehicle never looks like a standard rental.
Light and Atmosphere
Ambient lighting used to be a novel party trick, but now it’s a central feature. With 64 customizable colors, you can set a calm blue for a rainy morning drive or a warm red for an evening cruise.
The electric GLC extends this overhead. Its standard panoramic roof can be upgraded with SKY CONTROL, which electrically tints the glass and adds a starlit illumination after dark. Passengers almost always ask about it first.
The AMG® Experience
Slide into an AMG® model, and the space gets tighter in the best way. Seats hug harder, and the AMG® steering wheel adds dedicated DRIVE UNIT dials so you can adjust driving modes without tapping through menus mid-corner.
You gain firmer sport seating, hybrid-specific MBUX readouts, and optional carbon fiber trim. It feels firmer initially, but after one sharp on-ramp, you’ll start looking for excuses to take the long road home.
Less Button Hunting, Better Voice Controls
The latest MBUX systems rely heavily on conversational voice commands. Talking to the car is faster than searching for physical switches in the dark, and it leaves a clean, uncluttered dashboard with fewer crevices to dust. Both the CLA and electric GLC leverage the new MB.OS architecture for faster responses and cleaner digital layouts.
Smart Interior Packaging
Compact dimensions don’t require cramped seating. The CLA’s standard glass roof keeps the cabin feeling airy, while the electric GLC features a flexible 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench. That center pass-through lets you store long cargo like skis without sacrificing two full rear seating positions.
