The 2021 Mercedes-AMG® GLE 63 S Coupe Is The Wonderfully Wicked Twin To The 2020 53
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 has been refashioned for the year 2021, and as it did the year prior, it offers the “Coupe” body style. This new model has a roofline that is more sloped and defined, it also has an interior that, as expected in all Mercedes models, has an exclusive look to it.
The Mercedes-AMG® 53 version of the coupe already made an introduction, and the company unveiled the finest AMG® GLE 63 S variant of the SUV. Now comes its 2021 alter-ego, the GLE 63 S Coupe. Both express performative execution in a mid-size Mercedes SUV.
Mechanical Twinning
Those who are familiar with the dynamic mechanical components of the GLE E 63 S SUV should expect nothing but the best of the new GLE 63 S Coupe. This powerhouse is a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 that makes 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. This is a noticeable increase from the previous 2019 GLE 63 S Coupe, which gathered 577 horsepower with 561 lb-ft of torque.
The new Coupe can zoom from 0-to-60 mpg 0.4-seconds quicker than that of the outgoing 2019 model. With 3.7 seconds, the Coupe’s 0-60 time and its maximum speed of 174 mpg precisely matches the figures of the regular GLE 63 S.
Powerful AWD
The standard 4MATIC® + all-wheel drive is paired up with a 4.0-liter V8 and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The all-wheel-drive system can send up to 100 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear axle; the rear axle features an electronic limited-slip differential. A 48-volt mild-hybrid engine supplies an extra 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque in sweet and short surges.
The impressive 48-volt system powers-up the suspension’s active anti-roll bars; Other exceptional chassis features involve adaptive dampers, air springs, and active engine mounts. A RACE setting that is exclusive to the 63 S is among the standard drive modes. The air suspension automatically lowers the GT’s ride height in the RACE, Sport, and Sport + modes. Alternatively, the Trail and Sand modes raise the ride height for extra ground clearance at speeds that are below 43 mph.
The standard front brake rotors are 15.7 inches in diameter and the rear are 14.6 inches; They are both compressed by red brake calipers. Also, it is optional to get carbon-ceramic brake rotors sport bronze-colored calipers.
Exclusive AMG® Design
In its external presentation, the new S Coupe shares some characteristics with the AMG® GLE 53 Coupe doppelganger. Both include the AMG®’s vertical-bar “Panamericana” grille, air intakes carved into the lower fascia, dual power domes on the hood, and side skirts on the lower body. The rear diffuser is outlined in chrome and shelters rectangular exhaust outlets. A standard feature is the 22-inch wheels, while the Night Package adds black trim and dark-tinted windows, which are optional.
On the inside, the AMG® seats are upholstered in special Nappa leather with AMG® logos; these seats are exclusive to AMG® of course. The AMG® 3-spoke steering wheel is also wrapped in Nappa leather as well as microsuede with a black hash mark above, you’ll also find that it has controls for drive modes.
The MBUX dual-screen display includes special AMG® graphics that include a Supersports instrument cluster with a central tachometer and upshift lights for the transmission’s manual code.
Competition For The Fall
The 2021 63 S Coupe is coming to dealerships this fall, following its SUV look-alike by a matter of months. The newest Coupe has a bit of competition in its midst, like the Audi (the SQ8), BMW (the X6 M and X6 M Competition), and Porsche (the Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe)…but we all know who will come out swinging.
Pricing for this new Coupe has not yet been announced. Last year’s 2019 model was $113,000 mode before destination, and it’s likely that the price will remain relatively close for the 2021 model.
