Reflecting On The Mercedes-Benz Grille

Mercedes-Benz has come quite a long way when it comes to the evolution of the design of their vehicles, particularly their famous front grilles. This significant part of the face gives it a special persona in the midst of a slew of automotive brands worldwide. However, contrasting us mere mortals, vehicle grilles only get younger over time, transforming and metamorphosizing into what the vehicles needs and are able to have beyond what we previously thought were limits of functionalities.

The same rings true for a grille belonging to Mercedes-Benz. It has gone through considerable iterations since Wilhelm Maybach outfitted his invention, dubbed the honeycomb radiator, to the Mercedes-Benz 35 PS in 1900. This radiator grille was made to simplify the cooling process of gasoline engines then and in turn, signified an era of vehicle grilles.

In 1931, the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz 170 completely changed the automotive industry. For the very first time, the radiator was fixed behind the grille for better protection, while was part of the car’s hood. This gave rise to the famous chrome grille, which not only acted as a protector for the but also as an identifier, together with the iconic three-pointed star emblem. From that point forward, the luxury German automaker continued modifying the chrome grille for years to come.

In the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz brought forth a new standalone grille design with the 300 SL “Gullwing” and the tinier 190 SL roadster, sometimes called the “sports car face.”  The horizontal slats became a signature among subsequent vehicles of the brand.

In 2007, the company started to offer grille choices to customers dependent on the trim level. One could either go classic (Classic and Elegance) or sporty (Avantgarde), which could be accessed in both C-Class and E-Class.

With the electric vehicle era making its round left and right, grilles of the five-star company are here for the long haul, but with a different function from the protective radiator cover that we’ve known in the past. Since there is no longer a need for a radiator, Mercedes-Benz has moved onto a Black Panel grille for its EQ range, which acts as the ideal surface for inconspicuous but indispensable sensors.
