Mercedes-Benz Confirms New S-Class EVs
Mercedes-Benz is launching a new S-Class series that will replace the EQS sedan. Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius recently confirmed that the EQS will be phased out in favor of a new S-Class. The latest luxury sedan series will consist of electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) models. This aligns with Mercedes’ new goal which is to focus more on ICE vehicles. Largely due to a decrease in EV demand, the German automaker plans to invest upwards of $15 billion into high-tech combustion technology. This doesn’t mean we won’t see new EVs and hybrids, however, consumers can expect a larger push toward ICE vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz Eyes ICE Vehicles With New S-Class Series
Mercedes-Benz is launching a new S-Class series of luxury sedans. This new class of sedans will replace the EQS sedan. While the EQS only recently launched, due to declining demand, the German automaker will retire the all-electric sedan in favor of two variants, a battery-powered sedan and an ICE sedan. Both models will share similar designs both inside and out. They will ride on different platforms, however. Mercedes-Benz will use a dedicated EV platform for its new EVs while ICE models will use an updated version of the automaker’s current MRA platform.
Mercedes’ S-Class EVs will likely offer similar performance specs as the EQS. The all-electric sedan utilizes a single-motor battery that delivers 335 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque. A dual-motor setup increases performance to 516 horsepower and 611 lb-ft of torque. With a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds, the EQS offers impressive capability and versatility. Despite its capability, the EQS has seen a slow in demand, hence Mercedes’ decision to discontinue the luxury EV sedan. There is still hope for EV enthusiasts as the S-Class will continue to bridge the gap between sustainability and performance with both fully electric models and hybrids.
Consumers can expect the new S-Class series to arrive in 2030. Mercedes-Benz has shifted its goals for its EVs and hybrids. As such, the automaker expects these models to account for half of its yearly sales by 2030. Initially, the German automaker expected these numbers by 2025, but innovation requires patience. Although the EQS will not see a second generation, it will serve as the foundation for future EVs. This means implementing what works and phasing out what doesn’t. Consumers can also expect a refresh for the ICE S-Class before the next generation officially debuts. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more information.
