Mercedes-Benz Unveils Hybrid AMG® SL 63 S E
Mercedes-Benz unveiled a new AMG® hybrid version of the SL 63 called the SL 63 S E Performance. Mercedes combined an 805 horsepower V8 engine with an electric motor to create one impressive hybrid roadster. The German automaker has been focused on its electric lineup lately, revealing an all-electric G-Wagon. Like many other automakers, Mercedes-Benz is looking toward an electric future. To that advance, the automaker has built the first of many EV charging stations in the US. Along with offering a strong electric lineup, Mercedes will offer EV owners access to charging hubs throughout the Southeastern US. For now, we’ll take a look at the hybrid SL 63 S E Performance and see what consumers can expect.
Hybrid Mercedes AMG® SL 63 S E Performance Arrives In 2024
Mercedes-Benz revealed a hybrid roadster called the AMG® SL 63 S E Performance. This roadster takes on a unique stance combining a powerful V8 engine with an electric motor. The result is 805 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of just 3 seconds. Given Mercedes’ large focus on EVs lately, this high-performance hybrid SL 63 S E may be a way to let consumers know EVs are just as powerful as gas vehicles. Fueling 805 horsepower and 1047 lb-ft of torque is a twin-turbo V8 engine paired with an electric motor on the rear axle. Mercedes AMG® made some tweaks giving the electric motor a 2-speed transmission and a limited-slip rear differential. This is paired with a 6.1kWh battery.
The hybrid Mercedes AMG® SL 63 S E Performance focuses on power rather than extended range. Owners can expect about 15 miles of battery range before the gas engine takes over. Despite this, the roadster sees impressive handling with four levels of regenerative braking. Active roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering also give drivers direct control with a rear spoiler providing downforce. For those wanting increased capability, there’s an aerodynamics package that equips the roadster with an underbody spoiler to minimize front-axle lift.
Owners of the SL 63 SE Performance will stand out with E Performance badges on the front fenders and an SL 63 S badge on the rear decklid. The roadster also sports a charging port since the hybrid’s electric motor charges via a 3.7kW onboard AC charger. Wheel options vary from 20-inch and 21-inch sizes. All in all, Mercedes’ SL 63 S E speaks to its commitment to EVs. The latest hybrid demonstrates EV capability with its impressive performance. We do not yet have an MSRP for the SL 63 S E Performance, but we expect it to land somewhere in the $200,000 (plus destination fee) mark. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more powerful EVs.
