A Brief Look At The AMG® Nameplate & Its History
Mercedes-Benz has carried the AMG® nameplate for some time now. As the performance division of Mercedes, the three-letter acronym has gained recognition for its distinct style and impressive performance. Having gotten its start in 1967, AMG® has continued to offer high-performance models that redefine the driving experience. As of late, Mercedes-Benz has been focused on EVs offering new models like the all-electric G-Wagon and EQE. The German automaker has also produced new hybrid AMG® models like the CLE 53 and SL 63. With EVs being given more attention, we thought we’d take a look at the AMG® nameplate and see how it got its start.
Mercedes-Benz AMG®: Then And Now
As the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG® serves as the go-to for those seeking high-performance variants. The division got its start in 1967 when Mercedes-Benz (Daimler-Benz at the time) engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher teamed up to develop racing engines. The two focused on power and performance modifying Mercedes models like the 300SE and 300SEL to be race-ready. Seeing success with their powerful engines, the two would eventually create their own company called Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, hence the acronym AMG®. Having noticed their immense success, Mercedes-Benz would partner with AMG® in 1990. In 1993, the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG® would debut as the first joint project between the two companies.
Today, consumers can spot an AMG® model based on the AMG® badging and unique nameplate. Most Mercedes-Benz models offer an AMG® variant that increases performance and capability. Models will typically have a distinction such as the C 300 being the C 63 S in the AMG® variant. AMG® variants also tend to feature unique styling elements such as spoilers, diffusers, and wheels. Some variants even redesign the front grille to create a sportier aesthetic.
AMG® models vary in performance and capability. While Mercedes-Benz indulges in luxury, the AMG® variant emphasizes power. Those consumers looking for a high-performance Mercedes will do well browsing the AMG® variants. Horsepower and torque can reach extreme levels like with the Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT63 which offers 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Of course, with such power comes a hefty price tag. The latest GT63 starts at an MSRP of $170,350 (plus destination fee). That’s not to say that all AMG® variants will run that high. Consumers wanting the best of both worlds can find models like the Mercedes-AMG® CLA35 which starts at an MSRP of $54,950 (plus destination fee). Overall, AMG® has managed to combine luxury with power creating one of the most recognizable nameplates yet.
